The leading cause of brain injury from an outside source is car accidents, with incidents involving firearms as the second most prevalent cause followed by falls.

The head does not have to be struck by an object in order for brain injury to occur. Any forceful motion that results in the brain smashing against the skull can bruise or tear brain tissue and result in bleeding. Bleeding often creates pressure which further damages the brain.

If you suffered brain injury during an accident, the brain damage may not show up in MRIs or CT scans. However, if you experience headaches, have loss of memory, feel fatigued or have trouble sleeping, these could be symptoms of brain injury.

Brain injuries also occur at birth, such as cerebral palsy or other brain damage that may not become observable until later as the child develops.
